Nottoway County annexed by neighboring Amelia
Due to a mass exodus of residents leaving Nottoway County, Amelia County is capitalizing on the opportunity to absorb this area of land for the bargain basement price of $5,792.28. This equates to $18.33 per square mile.
Nottaway has slowly fallen into decline as residents have waited for a promised “Mark Park” that has never materialized. The only evidence of such development is a small abandoned warehouse in the middle of a field near the county seat. According to resident Billy Joe Crumpton, “Me and my family moved to a trailer on the edge of the ‘supposed’ Mark Park property. I was told this would be the next big thing in Nottoway. I bought this track of land for $8,400, hoping to double my investment, retire in the mountains. Now I just say, ‘there’s Not-A-Way’ this will ever come. I ain’t seen so much as a llama. Where’s the go-cart track? Where’s the stocked koi pond?”
Before the county established its own government, it was known as Nottoway Parish, a district of Amelia County. Nottoway Parish became Nottoway County by legislative act in 1788. The Virginia General Assembly will meet for a special session on May 2, 2010 to reverse this act and return the land to Amelia.
